How do we encourage a culture of care?

JustFaith provides a context in which participants can grow in their commitment to care for vulnerable people and for our common home. Through a rich and intensive process, groups become communities that together pray, reflect, dialogue, and encounter people on the margins of society. JustFaith is designed for use in diverse Christian communities.

We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise.

– The Earth Charter

Listen to the call of the Gospel

Over the course of 24 sessions, participants study, reflect, and dialogue on critical realities through the lens of the Gospel and the teachings of our faith.

Listen to the cry of the Earth

Through retreats, immersions, readings, videos, dialogue, and guest speakers, JustFaith participants embrace the invitation to develop a culture of care as they investigate the eco-social justice teaching of our faith.

Listen to the cries of God’s people

Inspired by a new level of understanding and deeper insights into the world’s needs, JustFaith participants develop passion, compassion, and patience that prepare them for the ongoing work of social mission.

Program Overview

Using materials provided upon registration, two or more participants co-facilitate the process.

JustFaith includes twenty-four 2 ½-hour sessions, broken into four phases of six sessions.  All sessions include prayer, dialogue, active listening, and relationship-building. Some sessions also include videos and/or guest speakers.

The most essential resource is the community formed through the JustFaith process.  Participants deepen their understanding through in-depth reading of several books and viewing a number of DVDs and online materials.

The ideal group size is 8–12 people; a small faith-sharing group that is connected by deep listening, dialogue, and trust.

Immersions and Retreats

To broaden perspectives, each of the 4 phases include an immersion where participants visit local organizations and connect with those living and working on the margins of society.

Unique Components

Opening and Commissioning Retreats frame the process. Four to six weeks after the Commissioning Retreat, participants re-gather for a day to discern next steps.

What They’re Saying

- Marisol H.
Virginia Beach, VA
“What is different since I completed JustFaith? The way I pray; the way I eat; the way I shop; the way I parent; the way I serve; the way I view community; the way I view neighbor; the way I view enemy; the way I participate in church and community; the way I participate in policy issues; the way I begin and end my day.”
Helene S.
“Never did I plan on such a rich experience as that provided by JustFaith. It fed and enriched the entire person… The result of this was astonishing. I never really thought that I could make a difference in the world. But I have come to see that one person can affect change. I will never be the same.”
Rev. John D.
Des Moines, IA
“I discovered many treasures during my JustFaith experience. One was the rich reading materials and powerful books educating me about the systems which perpetuate injustice. The second was the spiritual richness experienced in a small group of people exploring the call to Christian social gospel. The group sharing and prayers were a true gift.”

During the JustFaith program, a deep awakening took root in me to make a difference in the world, no matter how large or small.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this program just for Catholics?

No. JustFaith offers material in an accessible format that can be used in diverse Christian contexts. This provides options and opportunities for groups to adapt the material to fit their unique needs.

Are participants expected to complete all the phases?

Yes, participants commit to the entire program. Participants joining or leaving the group after the first session or two disrupts group formation and process. To maintain momentum, we recommend that groups schedule all of the phases without breaks in between. If groups choose to take breaks, we recommend no more than two weeks between phases.

Does the program registration fee cover the full cost of the program?

No. Program fees and resources provide only about 25% of the cost of program development and maintenance. The majority of the cost of each program is provided by generous donations from past program participants. We are also sustained by the support of our partner organizations and grants. JustFaith Ministries relies on these partners to make sure all programs are affordable for churches, organizations, and individuals who want to participate in our mission.

What is required of co-facilitators?

Facilitators are not expected to be the expert or “teacher” with all the answers.

Guided by user-friendly materials and with support from JustFaith Ministries staff (as needed),

JustFaith co-facilitators:

  • gather materials, coordinate logistics, and prepare to facilitate a session
  • express a genuine interest in the social mission of the Church
  • are capable of overseeing a group conversation
  • are attentive to the needs and energies of the group

Is this a program focused only on ecology and climate change?

Like Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ message, this program builds a bridge between social and environmental concerns. Acknowledging the connection between our care for the planet and for people, JustFaith embraces the vision of eco-social justice, integrating ecological realities into social justice themes.
