Immigration and the Golden Rule: Dispelling the Myths in the Current Debate About Immigration

For the first time in 400 years a new monument has been added to Saint Peter’s Square in Rome.  Why this particular monument and at this particular moment?  What is so centrally Christian about the questions this monument and its placement are asking us?

The current global situation around migration brings together two apparently irreconcilable poles:  increasingly xenophobic, nationalist, and racist attitudes on the one hand, and extreme situations of hardship due to wars, climate change and economic upheaval on the other.  How do people who embody a faith that does justice practically engage with our explosive and volatile current moment?  When a problem is so enormous, how do we activate ourselves into action for love?

Theologian Dr. Cecilia González-Andrieu of Loyola Marymount University, invites us to consider how the questions of migration and the world’s most vulnerable people can become an opportunity for developing and expressing a truly prophetic faith.
