Just Engagement: The Power to Change

Our eight-week program offers tools and tips to organize your own grassroots advocacy efforts, no matter what issue you or your group decide to address.

“We’re not bringing the kingdom. Jesus is bringing the kingdom. But we can spread the kingdom as we do God’s will as it is done in heaven. So to really spread the kingdom is not to just create a righteous law, it’s to create a society in which government lives out its divine purpose.” – Alexia Salvatierra, co-author of Faith-Rooted Organizing

How do I put into action the need for social change in my community?

Through the lens of the Christian faith, Just Engagement is an eight-week module that invites you to look at different ways to engage in your own grassroots advocacy efforts. In small groups you will discern how your gifts, skills and passions are best utilized to create social change. This program includes grounding in Scripture, reflection on past and present social movements, wisdom from community advocates, tools for successful advocacy, and resources to support you and your group for the long haul as you actively impact social change.

Program Overview

Groups are co-facilitated by one or two participants.

Sessions

Just Engagement: The Power to Change consists of eight 2½-hour sessions. All sessions include prayer, dialogue, active listening, and relationship-building.  Some sessions may include videos and/or a guest speaker.

Participation

JustFaith Ministries recommends that a group be approximately eight to fifteen people.

Resources

Participants deepen their understanding through reading and viewing videos and online materials. The most essential resource is the community formed through the process.

Immersion and Retreat

To gain some practical experience engaging in grassroots advocacy efforts, Just Engagement: The Power to Change includes an advocacy immersion experience. Participants visit with local leaders, organizations, or community organizing groups engaged in efforts to create social change. The module also contains a retreat that provides a foundation for community building.

“I see a real need for this JustMatters module, Just Engagement: The Power to Change, in our world today. I talk with community members and know that they are passionate about their causes, and truly want to make a difference, but they don't always know how to go about giving public support or recommendations for policy. I love the idea of giving them an opportunity to learn how to advocate in an educated and positive manner. I think this module could be the action piece that they are looking for.”

“Advocacy is an incredible opportunity for the people of God to not only impact the lives of marginalized people, but to proclaim the truth about who God is. When we seek justice for the oppressed in the public square we are also making a statement about the world as it should be--the way God created it to be, where all creation flourishes in relationship with each other and God. From Moses, Esther, and the Apostle Paul to Dr. King and Dorothy Day God has used people throughout time to proclaim justice, secure justice, and tell the world about God's love. In this spirit, I am excited to contribute to JFM's new program, Just Engagement: The Power to Change.”

“...the thing is, if someone tells me as a pastor, as a Christian leader, that I’m not supposed to be political, then I’m going to understand that they don’t think I’m supposed to actually read the Bible or take Jesus seriously. I don’t understand how you can read the story and say that we’re not supposed to be engaging in political conversations.”
